Leeds United: Becks should be back this week

Jermaine Beckford is on course to return from injury in time for Saturday's League One match at Wycombe after missing Leeds United's Carling Cup tie at Darlington as a precaution.

The striker failed a fitness test on Monday morning, leading to his omission from United's first-round victory over Darlington later that evening, but he is set to regain his place in Simon Grayson's line-up at Adams Park.

Beckford made an impressive start to the new season by scoring twice in last Saturday's 2-1 victory over Exeter City, but he sustained a knee injury in that game and Leeds were unwilling to risk him at the Darlington Arena, where Enoch Showunmi and Mike Grella took to the field as Grayson's strikeforce.

United's manager is expected to reinstate both Beckford and Luciano Becchio against Wycombe – Becchio appeared as a substitute on Monday having complained of ankle and calf problems in the build up to the cup tie – with Beckford scheduled to resume full training later this week.

Grayson said: "It's nothing serious at all, but the way he landed and jarred it at the weekend meant he couldn't play (at Darlington). He did well to carry on against Exeter but he was sore. I wouldn't have thought he's a doubt for the weekend though."

Leeds' squad will be strengthened by the return of at least three players, Beckford included, for their second league game of the term.

Central defenders Rui Marques and Patrick Kisnorbo were both missing from the clash with Darlington after being named in the national squads of Angola and Australia respectively, but will fly home to England after international friendlies tonight.

Left-back Ben Parker, who has a hamstring strain, is unlikely to play at Adams Park while Neil Kilkenny is also challenging for a place in the centre of midfield after shaking off an ankle injury.
