Leeds United: Becchio’s form kept veteran Gray out of the picture - Warnock

Luciano Becchio has scored 19 goals to date this season.

Luciano Becchio has scored 19 goals to date this season.

Neil Warnock admitted that Andy Gray had been a victim of Luciano Becchio’s form after releasing the striker early from his deal at Leeds United.

Gray parted company with Leeds on Wednesday afternoon, severing his one-year contract and joining League Two club Bradford City, and Warnock praised a “super pro” who “never really got a look in.”

The 35-year-old – a forward generated by United’s academy in the 1990s – failed to make a single league start this season and was consigned to the bench as Becchio raced towards a mid-term tally of 19 goals.

Gray joined Leeds in July as back-up for the Argentinian, returning to Elland Road on a short-term basis after leaving Barnsley, but a move to Bradford was resurrected last week following City’s unsuccessful bid to sign him in the summer window.

Warnock said: “He never really got an opportunity. Becchio’s done well and Andy never really got a look-in.

“I can’t fault him and he’s been a super pro. He’ll do Bradford a lot of good.

“He’s got ties here and I think he’d like to do some coaching with our academy at a later date. He’s more than welcome to do so.”
