Leeds United 2 Bradford City 1

Leeds United took the spoils from a thrilling clash with Bradford City to reach the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

United settled the first West Yorkshire derby between the clubs since 2001 with two goals during a frenetic first half which also saw a strike from Bradford's Joe Colbeck disallowed for offside and a string of other clear opportunities.

Leeds were handed the initiative early on after Paul McLaren's handball in the seventh minute gave Andy Robinson the chance to tuck away a low finish from the penalty spot, and Luciano Becchio doubled United's lead on 42 minutes with a header from Robert Snodgrass' corner.

But controversy hung over Colbeck's effort which found the net after Frazer Richardson cleared his first shot off the line, only to be ruled out by an offside flag, and both Omar Daley and Barry Conlon came close to forcing an equaliser before Becchio's goal.

The Argentine was left unmarked to steer home a header seconds after Robinson's long-range shot had smashed against the underside of City's crossbar.

Frazer Richardson hit the post early in the second half as Leeds pressed for more goals, but Kyle Nix lashed home a fierce shot on 71 minutes to set up a tense finish which United survived.
