Huddersfield Town v Leeds United: Terriers tight-lipped over Jermaine Beckford fitness

Jermaine Beckford’s fitness remained a closely-guarded secret today with Leeds United waiting to learn if they will face their former striker at Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Beckford is fighting to overcome the hamstring strain which has forced him to miss Huddersfield’s last three games and Town manager Simon Grayson refused to confirm whether he was likely to be fit to start against his old club.

“You always want your best players available,” said Grayson. “We hope it’s sooner rather than later.”

Beckford, inset, made his name at Leeds after joining the club from non-league Wealdstone in 2006, scoring 85 goals before leaving for Everton in 2010.

The 28-year-old’s final season at Elland Road brought him the League One player-of-the-year award and an impressive year with Everton led to an expensive transfer to Leicester City.

Leeds were one of several clubs who looked at signing Beckford when City boss Nigel Pearson ruled him surplus to requirements at the start of this term but Huddersfield secured him on a three-month loan in late September.

Beckford has scored three times for Town but last played in a 1-0 win at Barnsley three weeks ago.
