Grimsby in for Leeds United winger
Grimsby Town manager Mike Newell says his club are "working hard" on securing the signing of Peter Sweeney from Leeds United.
Sweeney is wanted by Grimsby after finishing last season on loan at Blundell Park, and the League Two club are pressing for a deal with the Elland Road midfielder.
United would not stand in the way of Town's attempt to take the former Stoke City and Millwall player to the east coast permanently with Sweeney on the very fringes of Simon Grayson's first-team plans, and Newell is firmly focused on persuading Sweeney to relocate to Blundell Park in the near future.
Newell said: "The chairman is working hard on that. We'll do everything possible to try and persuade the player that this is the place he should come to play.
"He's a good lad on and off the pitch and he has good ability. I've said it before that he's a player I'm really keen on and I would like to get him to Grimsby. It is something we're working on."
Sweeney has 12 months left on his contract at Leeds but would be unlikely to feature for the club next season having failed to appear in United's senior line-up since May 3, 2008.
