Coventry City v Leeds United: Redfearn pulls no punches after dire defeat

Leeds United’s decision to delay the appointment of a new manager was under fresh scrutiny today after a dire defeat to bottom-of-the-table Coventry City.

Neil Redfearn’s spell as caretaker boss took a turn for the worse as a 2-1 loss at the Ricoh Arena struck another blow to United’s faltering hopes of qualifying for the Championship play-offs.

Leeds succumbed to two penalties from former Elland Road loanee Gary McSheffrey – the decisive goal coming in injury-time – and Redfearn reacted angrily to United’s performance, admitting his players had “failed to turn up.”

Redfearn was berated by United’s supporters after substituting striker Ross McCormack with time running out and the score level at 1-1, and the loss raised further questions about United’s refusal to move quickly to name Grayson’s successor after sacking the 42-year-old with 18 Championship games remaining.

Leeds said at the time that the decision was taken to inspire a charge to the play-offs but United have claimed three points from a possible nine under Redfearn and are in danger of dropping out of the fight for sixth place.

Redfearn admitted the loss at the Ricoh Arena had hindered his chances of a longer-term opportunity, saying: “I don’t think we turned up.

“No disrespect to Coventry but they’re bottom of the league, they’re lacking confidence and they’re struggling. The last thing you want to do is give them a leg up which is what we did.

“We came in 1-1 at half-time and we’d been poor if I’m being honest. We didn’t get about them and we carried too many players.

“It’s difficult for me because this is on a caretaker basis and I’ve got to be careful with what I say and how it comes across but home truths had to be told at half-time. If you don’t turn up and have a go then you should expect a bollocking.”

But Redfearn defended himself after the away crowd reacted to McCormack’s late substitution with chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing.”

“They’re entitled to their opinion,” Redfearn said, “but Ross has worked his socks off in the last two games and on a heavy pitch at Bristol City. He looked a bit leggy and it wanted changing.

“If the fans can’t accept that then I understand, it’s fair enough. I’m going to make mistakes, and if it’s a mistake made in their eyes then it’s been made in a genuine cause – to try and make us better.”

@170 Allan, how much was the squad worth when Grayson took over though? With Howson, Delph, Beckford, Johnson etc. in it? Its possible that he inherited a £40m squad spent £10m and left us with a £30m squad. Those numbers are all twisty though, as they were Lge. 1 players at the time and Larry did stumble into a promotion.

Lets all take a moment here.... You could bring in Mouriniho, but it wouldn't make a jot of difference with the dross we have at our disposal.... Redfern has missed his big chance. Why didn't he line up an attacking 433 and really take a stab at these "EASY" games.... The FA are currently programming a football management simulation exam for all Coaches taking their badges. They are using the Leeds managers position, in a similar test to the Kobayashi Maru, to see what they do in an un-winnable scenario.... SOS.... This is FC Elland Road we have struck a gravitic Bates mine within the Neutral Zone and our systems are failing..... SOS....

While I respect the right of free speach (and there are many who gave their lives so that we could enjoy that right).......all these postings and player artilces are getting a bit boring now.....let's draw a line under them and go out there and score at least one more goal than the opposition, and win a game....all this is doing my head in...MOT

158Whitevanman1 I HAVE NEVER MADE A CASE EITHER FOR OR AGAINST KB.Having made that clear I have to confess that, being a simple soul,I find myself confused about all the conflicting claims made regarding the amount given to SG for transfers. From what I can make out the total amount is certainly no more thal 9.5 mill, possibly less.I'm trying square this with a statement made on this site last week.A poster, whose name I forget, claimed that he had been reliably informed that the LU playing squad is currently valued at £30 mill.Given that Grayson spent no more than £9.5 mill on players and the squad is now valued at £30 mill am I now to assume that he was a latter day miracle worker and financial genius? By the way,can you tell me if Bramley white is having trouble with his bowel movement cos it appears that all his effluent is coming out of the wrong orifice

comment 166, if HTFC chairman knows that Clark is seriously in the frame for the Leeds job why would he sack him and have to pay up his contract when he can wait and receive compensation from Leeds.

The headline reads "Redfearn pulls no punches after dire defeat", yet considering the embarrassing, limp-wristed defeat against a severely weakened, bottom-placed Coventry, Phil Hay's article describes a virtual love-in and men's support group where they all hug each other, sit around in a circle and reassure each other that they are beautiful individuals who are not to blame for anything, and whose feelings are "valid"... God help us.

Watching my son play a NCEL game last Tuesday at AFC Emley I got talking to a guy who works with the Acadamy at TA. He is also Redfearns close friend and he told me that his mate Redders had been told he would get 3 games to prove himself. The next day Bates made tha tvery statement. This guy also told me that the previous Wednesday Warnock had been approached and offered the job but had turned it down. He went on to tell me that his other mate at HTFC Mark Lillis( who has just taken over as caretaker at the Galpharm ) had heard from the Chairman at HTFC Dean Hoyle that Lee Clark was seriously in the frame. This was a week last Saturday. Maybe some truth in it

First of all i think if we sit tight, the way these sackings are going we could get Alex Ferguson, or Kenny Dalglish. With further movement today, Lee Clarks adding to the list of available managers, its becoming more bouyant than the transfer window. Clark could be a good option, maybe another young Brian Clough. now theres a name to remember, However he is only tried and tested in the lower league, So again i cant wait to get another debacle, out of the way come Saturday, then perhaps we might start getting long awaited news,of whats to happen. i hope Warnock, worry about can he keep a team in the premier if and when we get a sniff of it. At present we are a million miles away. Finally just a thought,i seem to think all this started with the sale of Gradel, then the behind scenes of Andy O'Brian. We must see sense after Saturday and pur Redfearn back in his comfort zone.
