David O'Leary's verbal assault on Michael Bridges was an irregular reaction to the striker's winning goals in a West Yorkshire derby between Leeds United and Bradford City.

Bridges' brace at Valley Parade saw off the challenge of Bradford, producing a crucial result on a weekend when Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal – the clubs rivalling Leeds for Champions League qualification in the Premiership – all dropped points.

Bridges scored in the 12th minute, unmarked as Ian Harte swung a free-kick into City's box, and he put the match beyond Bradford's reach in the second half by turning home Alan Smith's unselfish pass on the edge of the six-yard box.

Peter Beagrie pulled a goal back with a screaming free-kick but Leeds held on.
