Speculation has linked Leeds United targetman Luciano Becchio with a shock January switch to Championship rivals Middlesbrough - although any successful move appears unlikely.
Boro boss Tony Mowbray is in the market for a big striker in the transfer window - having also been strongly linked with Coventry City frontman Lukas Jutkiewicz.
But with the Teessiders’ transfer kitty pretty small, the realistic chances of a big-money move for Argentine striker Becchio - contracted with United until the summer of 2014 - seem slim unless chairman Steve Gibson suddenly loosens the purse strings or Boro fund any bid with player sales.
Late last week, Mowbray urged Boro fans not to expect Gibson to flash the cash with finances stretched by the high wage bill at the club.
Mowbray said: “He’s (Gibson’s) not a money tree that can keep finding cash. You have to have a business plan and the wage bill here is too high.
“The supporters need to know that there is not a pot of money, not while the wage bill is higher than we would like it to ideally be.”
