LEEDS UNITED: Jackett: Freedman was key to United
Millwall manager Kenny Jackett says Leeds United will be without the player responsible for unlocking his defence at the New Den last season when the Elland Road club return to London on Saturday.
Jackett is gearing up for another keenly-fought battle with Leeds after watching his side lose at home to Gary McAllister's side in April, and he placed the credit for United's 2-0 victory on the shoulders of veteran striker Dougie Freedman.
The ex-Crystal Palace striker – an influential loan signing of McAllister's last term – featured for 89 minutes of a game which moved Leeds to the brink of qualification for League One's play-offs, but Freedman's temporary deal with United expired in May and the club chose not to approach him for a second time during the summer.
The 34-year-old has since joined Southend United on a free transfer, scoring four times in as many matches, and Jackett still believes Freedman was the deciding factor in a rare Leeds win at Millwall six months ago.
Jackett said: "We gave them a very good game at our place last season, and as disappointed as I was by the result I had no complaints with the performance or the way we matched up to them.
"For me, the difference on the day was Dougie Freedman. He showed the quality and the experience that you expect of a player like him, and he was the key that unlocked our defence.
"I'd expect us to do the same on Saturday and it might be another game where one or two big performances are the difference between the sides. We're both in good form."
David Prutton and Andrew Hughes scored in United's 2-0 win at Millwall last season.
