Leeds United: Grayson delighted with transfer deadline day deals

Busy Leeds United boss Simon Grayson completed a double deadline-day swoop to sign Adam Clayton and Ramon Nunez – with transfer-listed pairing Lubomir Michalik and Alan Sheehan heading out of the Elland Road exit door.

United have sealed a beat-the-deadline permanent move for Manchester City midfield starlet Clayton, 21, who recently finished a month's loan spell at the club, which saw him make brief substitute appearances in the Championship encounters against Derby County and Nottingham Forest.

The switch for Clayton, who joins for an undisclosed fee, followed hot on the heels of the signing of Honduran international attacking midfielder Ramon Nunez, who has revealed that his preferred role is just behind the strikers.

Meanwhile, towering centre-half Michalik has joined League One side Carlisle United on loan until January 3.

Former Swindon Town loanee Sheehan – who like Michalik was told he had no United future at the start of the summer – has signed a permanent one-year deal with the Robins after leaving Leeds by mutual consent.

On incoming arrival Clayton, who first came to prominence during a blossoming loan spell at Carlisle United last term, Whites chief Grayson said: "When we looked at Adam in the first place, we thought there's a young, developing player. We haven't got too many players at

this club that are sort of in that bracket of 19, 20, 21-year-old's who we can work with and make better.

"He's only had a couple of brief first-team appearances and is desperate to try and make it to the first team (regular) here.

"We feel we've got something we can work with."

Nunez, 24, arrives on a free transfer after impressing during a one-month trial at Elland Road – with the Whites having now received a work permit for the player, who has put pen to paper on a permanent contract, having scored in United's pre-season friendly win over Bradford Park Avenue.

He has signed a short-term deal with a view to extending it in January. He is a regular for the Honduras national side and featured in this summer's World Cup against Spain and Chile.

The 5ft 7in player had initially joined the club at the beginning of August on a trial period after he had been released by the Mexican club Cruz Azul.

Nunez, capped 21 times by his country, scoring three goals, played in the MLS before his switch to Mexican football and is desperate to make an attacking impact.

Raised in the US, Nunez said: "I've recently been used on the wings, but my favourite position is in the hole behind the striker. I think that's where all my goals have come from and I just feel more comfortable there.

"But every team I've been on, I've been a good scorer and hopefully it will be the same here."

Slovakian international defender Michalik had been in the cold at United since the spring, with his final appearance coming as a

substitute in the 1-1 home draw with Brentford on March 6.

Transfer-listed in the summer, concrete interest in the 27-year-old, who signed for 500,000 from Bolton Wanderers in January 2008, had been slow to materialise ahead of the move to Brunton Park.

Carlisle manager Greg Abbott moved quickly to cover the potential loss of former Elland Road favourite Ian Harte – who moved ahead of the 6pm deadline to Leeds' Championship rivals Reading – by swooping for Michalik.
