Being placed in the middle division of five paid a handsome compliment to last season's form but may prove very challenging particularly after the loss of an excellent goalkeeper.

However, it was rewarding to see most of last season's team returning to the fray, with the notable addition of the spring-heeled goalie Frazer, who was stepping into the sizeable shoes vacated by Alex. Frazer could not have faced a tougher baptism, facing a Kings Park team who were deemed good enough for the first division last year and who clearly had something to prove following a disappointing season.

The match suffered a delayed kick-off, but this was not due to crowd congestion as was rumoured, but rather due to a misunderstanding with the league.

This did not help the pre-match nerves of the players or spectators but it was not discernible from the sterling start made by the Horsforth Reds who immediately put the home team under pressure.

Joseph was instrumental in midfield with his tireless running, ably supported by Sam H, Kaylem and Joe who supplied some sharp early passes. Up front Matthew and Callum looked threatening and the defensive unit of Tom, Sam C, Andrew and Josh

A showed promise in the early stages.

Unfortunately, the initial optimism was dashed when a swift break by Kings Park cut the Horsforth defence to shreds and allowed the home team to open the scoring.

Undeterred Horsforth poured forward and Joe shot narrowly wide, followed by a stinging effort by Sam H that the home keeper did well to hold. At the other end Frazer was kept busy by an incisive home attack and he did well to parry several efforts.

The match was looking well balanced, but the home team's striker looked a real handful and he scored two quick goals that that left Horsforth with a three goal deficit at half time.

Despite a rousing half time team talk by manager Steve Hughes, an early goal by the rampant home strike-force killed off any chance of a fight back, making the score 4-0. Despite fighting efforts by subs Leon, Josh P, and Michael there was no way back from here and the only bright spot in the 2nd half was a goal from Matthew, which came thanks to some excellent work by Kaylem. Joseph also nearly found the net but was foiled by an outstanding save by the home keeper. Sadly, Horsforth could not stop Kings Park continuing their scoring spree until the end and they eventually ran out 12-1 winners.

It was a dejected Horsforth team that trudged off the pitch, however the previous season started in the same vein, and results may show that facing Kings Park is a tall order for all the teams in Division C.

Next week sees our first home game of the season, against Shipley, and hopes are high for a vastly improved performance.
