A cold blustery day, high in the hills of Long Lee, greeted the travelling army of Horsforth Reds players and supporters. Clearly a tough match awaited them as Long Lee remain unbeaten this season and lie third in the Craven Aire Wharfe league.
The boys looked eager to go into battle and had their sights set on victory, confident that their home draw against Long Lee earlier in the season meant that they had nothing to fear from them.
The match kicked off with Long Lee having the advantage of kicking downhill and also with the wind and the home support behind them.
The green shirts of Long Lee seemed to swarm all over Horsforth in the early exchanges and clearly a tough game lay ahead. Pleasingly, our defence is looking stronger every week, marshalled by the enthusiastic Sam Cole who plays just behind the three-man defence.
They repelled the early home attacks, with the determined Oliver Poulton being outstanding, ably assisted by the tussling Michael Gibbon and the cultured defending of Andrew Parsons. Behind them Alex Fox Bullivant was as dependable as ever, dealing with some long range shots comfortably.
His handling was immaculate and has improved enormously this season.
Traffic was far from one way however and the midfield quartet began to get more involved in the match as the first half progressed. Joseph Snowdon seemed to cover every blade of grass and the tenacious Kaylem King snapped at the heels of the opposition at every opportunity.
Leon Cowell patrolled the left side of midfield and Joe Rainford was always on the lookout to play the killer pass through to Matthew Rabyand Sam Hughes in attack.
Both forwards had chances to get on the end of through balls, but couldn't make it count. One surging run down the left by Sam Hughes resulted in a fierce shot over the bar, and Matthew Raby also went close when through on goal.
The manager brought on Josh Pheasey, Callum Sharp and Josh Allman, with the latter making his debut. Josh Allman made an immediate impact with his running and tackling and looks a fine addition to the squad. Shortly afterwards Horsforth won a free kick which was chipped into the danger area by Sam Cole.
A goalmouth scramble ensued and when Sam Hughes got a touch in the box the ball broke to Callum Sharp who poked it home from close range to give Horsforth the advantage.0-1. The visiting supporters roared their approval.
Horsforth could easily have gone into half-time two goals ahead as Matthew Raby broke clear and lobbed the keeper expertly only to see the ball cleared off the line. However Long Lee did not surrender, equalising just before half time when their striker Aaron Sowden cut in from the left and lashed the ball into the corner of the net, giving Alex no chance. 1-1.
In the second half, both teams pressed forward looking for a winner. Alex had to be alert and made some excellent saves whenever Horsforth's defence was breached. Up front, Josh Pheasey had a couple of half chances which he couldn't convert. Joe Rainford took some threatening corners and Joseph Snowdon continued to dominate midfield, but the ball wouldn't break kindly for Horsforth's forwards. The away supporters screamed for a penalty when Joseph Snowdon appeared to be brought down the in box, but the claims were waived away.
As the final whistle approached, Horsforth piled on the pressure and Matthew Raby hit a searing shot that was brilliantly parried by the home goalkeeper, who was a strong contender for man of the match. However, try as they might, Horsforth couldn't find the finishing touch and the match ended all square at 1-1. Both teams were applauded off the pitch by a crowd that appreciated the superb effort by all the players of both teams.
Considering the quality of the opposition, this was a fine display by Horsforth, and it confirmed the progress made during the season. The team can look forward to the remainder of the season with confidence!
