Horsforth's Brownlee on brink of world glory

Horsforth's own Alistair Brownlee knows he must contend with ambitious predictions for his future after romping to an ITU World Championship Series victory in Hyde Park.

It was the fourth gold in the four series events he has entered, placing the brilliant 21-year-old on the brink of being crowned world champion.

Only the grand final in Australia remains for Brownlee who could take the title even if he fails to finish on the podium.

Should he succeed, he will become the first triathlete to become world champion at junior, under-23s and elite levels.

Such was his superiority in London on Saturday – he triumphed by eight seconds – he has been touted as an early gold medal favourite for London 2012 and tipped to reign for the next 10 years.

Few British sportsmen currently share Brownlee's dominance, yet the Yorkshireman's instincts are to remain level-headed about what he can achieve.

"A decade of success would be amazing. But look where I came from in the past two years," he said. "There are people out there who can come through and challenge. I'll just keep training and racing as hard as I can.

"London 2012 is in the back of my mind, and I hope I'll be in the same form then.

"The pressure on me now might be greater, but I'm still the same guy – I always train as hard as I can."
