Turf Talk: Wrangler squeezes in to final-day feature

Wrangler fits the bill for the Betfred November Handicap having just made the cut for the feature race on the final day of the turf season at Doncaster.

Owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing and trainer William Haggas can breathe easy after the lightly-raced five-year-old scraped into the maximum 23-runner line-up.

Conduct struck for the same connections in 2013 and Wrangler has a similar profile. He was off the track for over two years and blew away the cobwebs at Windsor early last month.

With that race under his belt, Wrangler ran much better over this course and distance two weeks ago when finishing an eyecatching third to To Be Wild. The High Chaparral gelding should be approaching peak fitness now and has outstanding claims off only 8st 1lb.

Growl, runner-up to the The Tin Man in the Group One Qipco British Champions Sprint at Ascot, can surely go one better in the Betfred Mobile Wentworth Stakes. Richard Fahey’s charge had earlier filled the same spot behind Brando in the Ayr Gold Cup and deserves to pick up these Listed honours.

Lady Of Camelot can oblige at the same level, and put behind a poor run on her latest start, in the Betfred TV EBF Stallions Breeding Winners Gillies Fillies’ Stakes. Things did not work out for the John Gosden-trained four-year-old when she took on colts and geldings in Newbury’s St Simon Stakes and she will fare much better back against her own sex. A reproduction of her second place behind her illustrious stable companion, Group One winner Journey, at Newmarket in September should see her go close.

She also does not have many miles on the clock.

Curbyourenthusiasm, sixth to stablemate Sheikhzayedroad in the Doncaster Cup, can benefit from a steep drop in grade and defy top weight in the Your Breeders’ Cup Guide At attheeraces.com/breederscup Handicap at Chelmsford.
