Ismail Mohammed enjoyed a big day at York last weekend and can pocket another sizeable prize when Amazour runs at Hamilton.

The Newmarket handler underscored the virtue of never giving up on the Knavesmire as Educate claimed the John Smith’s Cup at the fourth attempt.

Mohammed is now taken to do the business in the John Smith’s Scottish Stewards’ Cup at the Lanarkshire circuit. The four-year-old gelding is a good horse – he finished sixth to War Envoy in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot last year – but he had never quite stamped his authority on these big handicaps when it really mattered.

But that all changed at Newcastle last month when the son of Azamour claimed a hot six-furlong handicap by a neck from Moonraker.

Still relatively unexposed for a horse of his age, the chances are that a first victory since last May would have done Amazour the power of good – especially as it was his first start since the spring. Mohammed’s representative has gone up only 4lb for his Gosforth Park success, too, which still makes him a pretty attractively-handicapped animal.

The Listed race on the card, the EBF Stallions Glasgow Stakes, can fall to Andrew Balding and Ormito.

The three-year-old colt was disappointing in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, but he was never really a happy thoroughbred from the outset as he was noticeably truculent in the stalls. It might be better, then, to take the positives from his pleasing efforts in the Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood, when beaten just a length by Algometer, and when he did so well to finish third in the Chester Vase.

That form alone looks strong enough to anticipate a bold bid back in Listed class and back in distance.

Bossipop must have a grand chance from the head of the weights in the Hayburn Rock Financial Planning Ltd Handicap at Haydock.
