Horse racing: Fortune and Fanning can land us a double
Jumps action takes place at Doncaster tomorrow where it could the James and Keith Reveley show.
The father and son combo have been a potent force this season and in Eagle Rock (1.55pm), Special Catch (3pm) and Corkage (4.05pm) they have three good chances of adding to their tally.
Special Catch, a 50,000 guineas purchase who always travelled well last time, looks the best of them, while the all-weather fare comes from Lingfield tomorrow afternoon and Kempton in the evening.
It’s hard to be dogmatic about anything but both John Louis (6pm) and Cantor (7.30pm) have good chances and the strength of their excellent jockeys in the saddle could be crucial.
First up comes John Louis, a horse who beat off tomorrow’s main rival, Hurricane Hymnbook, by just a quarter-of-a-length at Lingfield last time.
John Louis has since gone up 4lbs, with Hurricane Hymnbook raised 3lbs, so there is clearly not going to be much between them but John Louis has more scope for progression and the better jockey.
Like last time, he will be ridden by Jimmy Fortune, one of the best around at present, with Hurricane Hymnbook again partnered by Stevie Donohoe.
Donohoe is capable but if it came down to a driving finish you would rather be with Fortune and the fact that John Louis has also only ever had five runs sways the deal.
That means this Phillip McBride-trained gelding is open to more progress than Hurricane Hymnbook, who has had 21 runs, and hopefully John Louis will be the sort of horse who only does just enough, making it hard for the handicapper to nail him.
He rates the nap on a difficult day, with Cantor appealing as a decent next best at 7.30pm.
This time we have the brilliant Joe Fanning doing the steering – a pilot who has been banging in the winners for Middleham trainer Mark Johnston lately – and a jockey who is now odds-on to be all-weather champion.
Cosier
Cantor might need him tomorrow as while this horse is clearly talented he is also quirky hence why it took him eight goes to win – two of his seven defeats being as a beaten favourite.
The superb Richard Hughes eventually worked the oracle on him at Kempton last time, when he saw off Missionaire by half-a-length, but Hughes has suggested the victory was cosier than it seemed, saying: “Cantor won easy but he’s probably better over one mile two furlongs.”
It’s the same trip tomorrow but Cantor was also very well punted last time, suggesting he is well handicapped, and only a 5lbs-rise for that success gives him every chance of going in again.
Fanning also rides an interesting contender for Johnston tomorrow evening in Red Orator (7pm) but the debutante has no fancy entries and the most likely winner is Marco Botti’s Munificence who ran a nice enough debut when third last time.
Pale Orchid might also be able to defy a rather harsh 5lbs rise for finishing second last time in a decent enough handicap at Lingfield (4.30pm), but hat-trick chasing Drawnfromthepastlooks the obvious one to be with in the first (1.45pm).
Back at Donny Tony McCoy also looks an interesting booking for The Romford Pele in the finale (5.10pm) and in terms of good jockeys there is no-one better than AP!
Best of luck with your bets.
