Girl just wanna have footballing fun

A football education group for girls in Oakwood kicks off next month.

The free-to-attend weekly sessions on a Wednesday are run by Oakwood Owls are aimed at girls aged from 12 through to 15 with Leeds United community office coach Tina Reeve delivering the coaching and fun activities.

The first session is due to begin on Wednesday, September 5, at the Fearnville LC pod & astroturf pitch (6-8pm). It follows a successful pilot project.

Local youth worker & provision organiser Rod Christopher will also be on hand to help out.

"Last year's pilot project turned out to a massive success all round, with local girls involving themselves in media learning projects at East Leeds FM, FA Standard coaching sessions, regular matches & football educational competitions inside our pod base behind the centre.

"We hope to again involve some of those girls,as well as many new additions, which can only help improve our provisions atmosphere long term. To join up, girls just need to have a willingness to learn more about the game, as ability is not all important to the progress of the group or its coaches.

"In total some 40 girls took part in our group last year, with a handful moving onto proper ladies league clubs around the city. From the feedback I received, the majority really enjoyed their time & had lots of fun along the way."

Mr Christopher added: "This year we've had to reduce potential numbers to a regular 20, in order to guarantee all participants full access to our advice & learned experience while with us."

Young footballers are welcome to get involved, regardless of ability & can find out more by contacting Rod Christopher on 07813 355763.

Alternatively, they can leave a guestbook entry of interest by logging onto the Oakwood Owls website at: www.oakwoodowls.leedslearning.org
