Football's the winner whatever the weather
Cross Gates Lions FC have been handed a cash boost to help towards the hiring of an all weather pitch.
The 375 grant by the BT Community Champions award scheme has been made thanks to the voluntary work of two BT Openreach employees Mark Elwen and Darin Brown.
Run by BT's charity programme, BT Community Champions awards BT people with funding on behalf of local community groups, charities and organisations where they work on a voluntary basis.
The junior football club is one of hundreds of organisations that applied for an award and impressed judges with how they would use their grant.
The Club plans to use the award towards the hire of a local all weather pitch throughout Autumn and Winter.
Mark Elwen, who has coached the team for four years, said: "We are very grateful for the award. In winter the local grass pitches become waterlogged and often un-useable.
"This will enable us to provide quality coaching and training even during very wet weather. It also makes it a far more enjoyable experience for the children - and the mums who usually have the job of washing mud caked kits!
"The BT Community Champions Award scheme provides a great opportunity for community groups like ours – every contribution makes a difference. It is very positive that BT recognises the voluntary work of its people and supports the voluntary sector in this way."
The award is not the only thing the team are celebrating.
The under-13 team also won the 'Most Sporting Team of the League' trophy awarded by the Garforth Football League at the end of last season.
"I was very proud of the players," added Mr Elwen, "Football is more than just winning and losing it is about teaching values as well, I think winning the trophy was an important part of why we were awarded the grant."
The team, which this season will be playing at Under 14, are currently seeking more players.
