Rapid relief for Albion but it's too late

Water carry on it's been at Tadcaster Albion in the past few weeks.

After helping themselves to a barrage of goals in an excellent Northern Counties East League Division One campaign thus far, the Brewers have found themselves concerned with a deluge of a different sort of late – namely flood waters.

Their Ings Lane ground is situated right next to the River Wharfe, which recently burst its banks and spilled over onto the pitch.

At one point, the water was over a metre deep and threatened to get into the clubhouse And while that danger was averted, the club have, understandably, had to postpone tomorrow's scheduled home match with Leeds Carnegie.

Boss and chairman Paul Marshall said: "The water is subsiding on the pitch and it's about half-clear now. It was about halfway up the goalposts at one point.

"But we were very, very lucky, as there was a raging rapid flowing towards the car park into the clubhouse at its height; but we've got away with it.

Blessing

"We managed to pull the carpets up and get the electricity off.

"In a way, Saturday's game being called off is a blessing as one of our better players – Mark Thompson – would have been suspended. But apart from that, we've a full- strength squad who are ready to play.

"We also wanted to get the game on for the finances. We had the Eccleshill game off two weeks ago and Monday's game was off and now this weekend's and it's set us back a little bit."

Division One action tomorrow sees fourth-placed AFC Emley host Brighouse, in fifth, while Glasshoughton head to fellow-strugglers Eccleshill. Pontefract Collieries host Grimsby Borough, while Yorkshire Amateur and Hemsworth MW visit Barton Town and Bottesford respectively.

In the Premier Division, Liversedge welcome mid-table Long Eaton and Thackley host lowly Parkgate. Nostell MW entertain second-from-bottom Lincoln Moorlands.
