Guiseley AFC: Comeback kings Lions are at it again
YOU BEAUTY: Dan Sheriffe celebrates his opening goal for Wakefield at home to Clitheroe.
Guiseley came from behind for the third match in a row on Saturday, this time salvaging a point as super sub James Walshaw notched two in a 2-2 draw at Histon.
Guiseley had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Ciaran Toner was brought down in the box, but striker Lee Ellington saw his penalty well saved by Jorg Stadelmann.
The hosts, galvanised from the penalty missesley, took a stronghold on the game and took the lead seven minutes before half-time with Dan Holman latching on to the long ball over the defence and coolly slotting past Steven Drench in goal.
The second half began in the same vein and after having a goal disallowed, the Stutes eventually extended their lead on 54 minutes, Holman again netting for Histon.
Dividends
Cue a double substitution from Guiseley boss Steve Kittrick, hauling off front two Chris Senior and Ellington and throwing on Danny Forrest and James Walshaw.
The gamble paid dividends as Walshaw swept home in the 71st minute to begin the fight-back.
Guiseley battled on with credible team spirit and when Walshaw was felled in the box, referee Sarah Garrett pointed to the spot again.
Walshaw dusted himself down and hit the back of the net with 10 minutes left on the clock for a grandstand finish.
For the Lions it was another valuable point on the road, and they move into second place in Blue Square North ahead of a tantalising home tie in the West Riding County Cup against Halifax tomorrow.
Guiseley Supporters Club are offering free travel to the FA Trophy fixture at Cambridge United next Saturday. For further details, contact the club.
Meanwhile, Harrogate Town enjoyed a 2-1 success at home to Hinckley United which left manager Simon Weaver full of praise for his side’s defence.
Robbie Youhill and Richard Pell scored to give Town the lead before Andre Gray pulled one back for Hinckley in the second half.
Weaver said: “This is a team that scored five goals against Stalybridge.
“We knew we had to do defensive work to nullify their threats and I think it worked well.”
Town ended the game with just 10 men after Stephen Turnbull was controversially sent off for violent conduct in the second half.
Weaver said: “I didn’t see it. To be fair he did say he raised his hands but it wasn’t a punch or anything.
“He pushed the lad as a reaction to a dangerous tackle. I just said ‘learn your lessons’.
“You can’t do that in football. That’s the rules.”
The win has moved Harrogate Town up to 16th in Blue Square Bet North.
Weaver added: “We need to get away from the fear factor of being in the lower third (of the table).
“We need to get up towards mid-table. We’ve got the capabilities of doing so.
“It’s about the three points and we really don’t care if we weren’t too entertaining.
“We need to bag enough points so we’re not worried in the last 10 games.”
FC Halifax Town were due to host Bishop’s Stortford but the game was called off due to frost after two pitch inspections.
