Harrogate Town are one step away from joining the Premier League big guns in the FA Cup third round.
A dream weekend for the Wetherby Roaders began with Saturday’s brilliant 1-0 success at Torquay United in which Chib Chilaka grabbed the only goal of the game after 20 minutes.
And in yesterday’s second round draw Town were then handed a tie at home to Hastings United who are fourth bottom in the Ryman Premier – the equivalent of a division below.
Town started positively at Torquay with Danny Forrest and Chilaka testing Michael Poke and on 20 minutes they took the lead.
A Kevin Nicholson slip let in Dwayne Samuels and he and Tom Platt combined to create a chance for Chilaka who scored via the inside of the post.
Inevitably, League Two Torquay hit back and Craig McGillivray had to turn Lee Mansell’s header round the post before Danny Stevens and Aaron Downes went close with headers.
A break down the left by Rene Howe set up Billy Bodin who contrived to shoot over from close range.
However, Town countered with Forrest and Platt releasing Luke Dean, who forced a diving save from Poke.
On 57 minutes, a Howe goal was ruled out for offside.
Torquay threw on all three subs and Niall Thompson immediately shot over before forcing Shane Killock to head off the line.
For Town, Danny Clayton and Jonny Allan replaced Forrest and Beesley, which gave them added impetus.
Adam Bolder and Allan combined to create a chance for Chilaka but his shot flashed wide and then Clayton forced Poke into a save at the foot of the post.
Mansell then headed over and Brian Saah missed Nathan Craig’s corner to leave Town to accept the applause of both sets of fans as they triumphantly left the pitch.
