Yorkshire Amateur League: Saints take cup spoils just in the nick of time

St Nicholas came from behind to beat Leeds City Reserves 2-1 and lift the Leeds and District Cup at Bracken Edge.

City took the lead when an unmarked Steve Clark headed in at the far post from a corner.

Leeds then missed a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 when they hit the post before the rebound was fired straight at the goalkeeper.

Just before the hour mark, Roy Frazer’s effort for St Nicholas was pushed out to Tesfa Walton who restored parity.

Fifteen minutes from time, St Nicholas won a free-kick with Daniel Fuller crossing for captain Ryan Brough to head home the winner.

It is just the third time the competition has been won by a Yorkshire Amateur league side.

In the Terry Marflitt Trophy, Farsley Celtic Juniors cruised into the final with a 3-0 win over Farnley Sports. Craig Farrand fired Farsley ahead before Joe Firth doubled the lead minutes later. Louis Surtees added the third and decisive goal as Farsley booked their place in the final in style. They will play Stanningley Old Boys in the final next Wednesday.

In the Premier Division, Wigton Moor moved off the bottom of the table as they beat Trinity 5-3. Leroy Watson scored a hat-trick while Sam Gibson and Jamie Sheard were also on the scoresheet as Wigton avenged the 4-0 defeated earlier in the campaign. Finding their form as the season reaches its climax, they still remain eight points adrift of eighth-placed Grangefield.

Ealandians climbed to second with a 3-2 win against Alwoodley. Ealandians had Ollie McEwan to thank for the victory as he scored an impressive double. James Parkinson scored Ealandians’ other goal while Alwoodley’s strikes came courtesy of Dan Whincup.

Stanningley beat basement club Rodillian 4-1 to further their woes with James Allen (2), Kyle Etherington and an own goal helping the visitors to victory.

In the Championship, Old Batelians are just a point off the relegation places after they were beaten 3-2 by Alwoodley Reserves. Batelians led twice, firstly through Phil Bryant and then Jermaine Moyce who scored after Carl Hasty had brought Alwoodley level.

Two goals from Cori Hendrickson either side of half-time means Alwoodley move up to fifth.

Stanningley put the pressure on Batelians as they picked up a vital three points in a 3-2 win at home to Thornesians.

Beeston Juniors moved level on points with leaders St Nicholas after a 3-1 win away at Shire Academics with goals from Carlton Binks, George Lazaro and Liam Tyrer.

St Nicholas could only muster a 2-2 draw with bottom of the table Leeds Independent.

A double from Lee Burrows helped Morley Town 3rds to a 3-2 win over Shire Academics 3rds in Wednesday night’s Hodgson Cup final.

After a goalless first half, Morley ran riot with three goals in 15 minutes with Jason Helm and Lee Burrows (2) both on target. Shire heaped the pressure on as a wonder strike from Ryan Hollings and a Matthew Ollernshaw goal cut the deficit but Morley held on for a memorable cup victory.

In Division One, Drighlington extended their lead at the top to eight points after they beat basement club Colton Athletic. A double from Shane Sowden, coupled with strikes from Jonathan Kitchen, Shane Sowden and Joe Hirst helped the home side to a comfortable victory.

Amaranth are making a push for promotion after a 4-2 win over Bedes leaves them third and just a point off the promotion places. A double from Jordan Northin proved in vain for Bedes as a hat-trick from Robert Dickinson and a goal for Phil Chryssanthou gave Amaranth the three points.

Leeds Medics 3rds defeated Wortley 3-1 with Paul Hodgson, Fergus Machin and sub Amir Ameen all on song for the visitors.

The sides with the worst form over the last six games, Grangefield Reserves beat Rothwell Reserves 2-1. Glenn Austwick and Jack Hill struck in the second half for Grangefield while Rothwell’s late goal came too late.

Division Two saw the top two sides, Gildersome Spurs and Huddersfield YMCA, meet with YMCA taking the spoils in a 4-2 win. Craig Burns, Jordan Jaber, Luke Person and Kieran Lenihan were all on target with YMCA now just five points behind Spurs.

Churwell Lions are up to second with a 1-0 win at Leeds Medics 4ths, but their Reserves (Division Three) were edged out 3-2 by visiting Kippax.
