Park Life: Ferrybridge hoping to progress in FA Sunday Cup '˜under the radar' on Merseyside

FERRYBRIDGE Progressive are four days away from arguably the club's biggest game in their history with the Castleford side looking to keep 'under the radar' en route to the FA Cup final of Sunday football.

Castleford Sunday League champions Ferry will travel to Alder Sports Club on Sunday to take on Liverpool side Home & Bargains in the quarter-finals of the FA Sunday Cup (2pm).

Progressive reached the semi-finals of the competition as the Carlsberg Pub Cup back in 2000 when the semi-final was held at Anfield and the final was staged at Wembley.

The team also savoured their greatest triumph yet last May when finally winning the West Riding FA County Challenge Cup.

But now Progressive are three games away from being crowned national champions and secretary John Goddard admits confidence is high after already ditching two top level Liverpool sides in Pineapple and Oyster Martyrs en route to the quarters.

Two-time winners Oyster were dumped out 1-0 on their visit to Yorkshire in last month’s last 16 tie while Pineapple were seen off 3-2 in the third round upon their visit over the Pennines. Progressive must now do without home advantage but Goddard is hoping for another FA Sunday Cup ‘surprise’.

Goddard explained: “When we reached the semi-finals at Anfield it was just for pub teams and it was a totally different thing. I think when we entered it this year people probably didn’t know who we were but by putting two of the top sides from Liverpool out has made one or two people sit up and take a look.

“We played really well against Oyster and if we can put that performance in then we’ve every chance but it’s a tough away game and you don’t really know what you are going into.

“It’s going to be a cracking standard, it’s the last eight but it’s all on the day. We’ll go there and give it a go.”
