Junior Football: Rothwell are brushed aside in final by five-star Wigton

WIGTON Moor United Under-12s are celebrating a Leeds and District FA Junior Cup trumph after seeing off Rothwell Town Whites 5-0 in the final.

After a goalless first-half, hat-trick hero Darnell Mintus opened the scoring with the first strike of his treble.

However, Wigton were also left thanking a fantastic save from keeper Adam Hillerby who kept out Rothwell before Wigton’s Harley Lambert and Brooklyn Flynn also netted.

Wigton manager David Cawthray beamed: “Our defence has played really well all season and we have gone through the whole competition without conceding a goal.

“Rothwell Town’s players kept going until the end of the game and were unlucky not to score.”

Elsewhere, Silkstone Under-17s ended a poor run of form with a 2-1 win over Bradford Park Avenue Under-17s in Division 3A of the Huddersfield League. Goals from Danny Casswell and Alex Plant Hately secured the win with Tom Arnold producing a man of the match performance.

Wrenthorpe Rangers Under-16s produced a fantastic second half comeback to overturn a 5-1 half-time deficit and run out 9-7 winners at home to Dale Juniors Under-16s in the Charles Rice League Challenge. Max Gray bagged a four-goal haul for the Wrens whose man of the match Kris Ashton also struck a hat-trick. Also on target were Adam Bedford and Jacob Wood with a effort from midway inside his own half.

Hall Green United Under-15s leapfrogged Kirkheaton Under-15s as a 3-1 home win put them second in Division Three of the Huddersfield League. Green’s goals came from Brandon Hewlett, Ethan Bale and a superb free kick from Curtis Preston. Danny Harder took the Green man of the match award for his commanding display is defence.

Horsforth St Margaret’s Stallions Under-14s exited the Garforth League Supplementary Cup after a 4-1 loss at home to Wigton Moor Under-14s. Wigton struck three times in the final eight minutes of the first half before adding a fourth from a corner straight after half-time. Horsforth then pulled a goal back through Harrison Lightowler. Joshua Bell took the Stallions man of the match award.

Garforth Villa Under-13s booked their place in the Selby League Cup final with a 6-1 defeat of visiting Pollington Under-13s. James Richardson led the way with a hat-trick, supported by a goal each from Tom Cryer, Lucas Claxton and Ross Wilkinson.

Ossett Albion Under-12s maintained their 100 per cent record in Division Two of the Huddersfield League with a 6-0 win at Deighton Under-12s. All six goals came in the last 20 minutes with a brace from Haydan Lindley-Spink supported by strikes from Matthew Thompson, Elliot Whitley, Thomes Mee and an own goal. Tom Corney was the Albion player of the match with Luke McGrath also on top form.

Wrenthorpe Rangers Under-12s enjoyed a 5-2 success at Garforth Rangers Juniors Under-12s in Division One of the Garforth League. Two goals from Ewan Hallows plus one each from George Wilkes, Kesh Nair and Mason Spencer saw the visitors celebrating with Hallows and Josh Lunn sharing the player of the match award.

Hall Green United Under-12s were outclassed 10-0 at Almondbury Lions Under-12s in Division Three of the Huddersfield League. Green trailed 7-0 at the break but went close in the second half through Cameron Gill and Luke Pollard. Brandon Powell made a welcome return after illness but some great defending from Joshua Geary earned him the player of the match award with keeper Courtney Rezvani taking the best attitude.

Horsforth St Margaret’s Colts Under-11s stepped up their chase for a terrific treble as a 5-1 success against Glasshoughton Welfare Juniors booked a place in the Leeds and District Cup final.

Held at Whitkirk Wanderers, Horsforth took a 15th-minute lead through a crisp shot from Sam Ryan. That lead was doubled after the interval through an unstoppable drive from Mattie Webb. Minutes later Ryan bagged his second and Horsforth made it 4-0 ten minutes from time when the hard-working Will Holmes connected with a fine header. Welfare then rallied to make it 4-1 but on the final whistle Oscar Helliwell deflected a Tom Woodeson shot into the net to bring up the nap hand. Horsforth – who are also chasing league honours – also have a Garforth Challenge Cup final against league rivals Pontefract Collieries to come.

Hall Green United Under-11s enjoyed a 4-1 win at Kirkburton Under-11s in Division Four of the Huddersfield League. Zak Groves lobbed Green into a fifth-minute lead which was doubled with a left-footed strike by Kane Hey from a Emily Sykes corner. Sykes then netted after the break and after Kirkburton hit back, Groves bagged Green’s fourth from a corner award after a Konrad Krok shot was saved. Green’s Cameron Reynolds took the player of the match award.

Stanningley Albion Reds Under-11s sauntered to an 8-1 triumph at home to Garforth Villa Under-11s in Division One of the Garforth League. Haroon Bostan’s hat-trick was supported by braces from Jarvis Barker and Luke Higgins plus a strike from Jake Rollinson.

In Division Four, Colton Juniors Whites Under-11s enjoyed a 5-1 success at home to Carlton Giants Under-11s. A brace from William Lobley took his seasonal tally to 40 while captain Jacob Beer was also at the double. Jack Newcombe also netted with a sweet left foot strike and man of the match Jack Murray would have capped a superb display with a long range goal had it not been for the underside of the crossbar.

In Division Five, Churwell Lions Blue Under-11s fell to an 8-1 reverse at Hunslet Club Greens Under-11s. The Lions trailed 5-0 at the break despite the efforts of keeper Charlie Green plus man of the match midfielder Kevin Gregory. Churwell pulled a goal back when Jordan Holmes played a superb ball through to Jake Harris to score.
