Neil Redfearn has revealed his departure from Leeds United scuppered plans to bring in a quartet of promotion-capable signings in the summer.

Redfearn was always regarded as a head coach at Elland Road, with little remit over signings, but did admit he was consulted about the business the club should do in the summer. He left the club before any of it could come to fruition.

The former Rotherham United manager contacted Burnley midfielder Joey Barton, Derby County defender Jason Shackell, Queens Park Rangers forward Matty Phillips and Stoke City’s Charlie Adam over moves. All four expressed an interest in joining the Whites.

Speaking to Radio Yorkshire, Redfearn said: “I was consulted at the end of the season by Andrew Umbers about possible signings and additions to the side. I came up with a list.

“People like Joey Barton and Jason Shackell and Matty Phillips, you know, all good players. Adam as well, who Thommo knew from Stoke City, Charlie Adam.

“These were all players that were interested. At that time we contacted them through different sources. “They were genuinely interested in coming to play for Leeds United, which is not difficult to sell, because it’s a top club.”
