So the curtain comes down on United’s first season back in the second tier of English football, or does it? With the Championship awaiting the outcome of our hosts’ FA hearing, the implications it could have would be huge and could change the shape of Saturday’s game. But as things stand Leeds need a six-goal swing and Forest to lose at Crystal Palace, and it seems the best we can hope for is a bit of pride. It would be nice to finish with an away win.

Leeds complete an eventful return to the Championship somewhat appropriately in a fixture surrounded by controversy, with United unusually not the centre of attention. The small venue and opponents’ position dictated one of the smallest away allocations of the season, scant reward for the magnificent travelling support the team has enjoyed once again.

Congratulations due to Max Gradel who deservedly swept the board as best player.

Barring any miracles, Leeds go into the last day of the season expecting it to be their last game. I firmly believe that whilst this season has ended on a disappointing note, United have stabilised and there is only one direction in which we are heading – and with Simon Grayson at the helm, it won’t be too long before we return to the Premier League. I can’t help but feel a tinge of jealousy at Norwich getting promoted but overall I am more than happy with this season.

Only a victory over the champions, a defeat for Nottingham Forest and a six-goal swing stand between United and a place in the play-offs! All Whites fans will have been lighting candles and worshipping at the altar of Brian Deane for a repeat of his heroics from 2004 on Saturday lunchtime, against the same opposition. I really hope that United take the game to their opponents. Let’s sign off in style and lay down a marker for next season!

Tomorrow is the day when we are going to defy the odds and come away from London with a play-off place in the bag. Simon Grayson will inspire the lads to a thumping victory which will send shockwaves to our rivals. Billy Davies’ Forest will be having sleepless nights after Crystal Palace show the form that kept them in the top flight for years. Cry me a river Billy. Come on United, this is it. Let’s get ready to rumble. If only Brian Deane was playing to bag us another famous four.
