I know there is a lot of Polish people that live here so I hope they will join the stadium and they will come to watch games – maybe because of me. We could have more Polish fans!

Leeds United’s Mateusz Klich

Poland international midfielder Klich, 27, completed his £1.5m move to United last week and although he admits he does not know much about his new home city, he is aware of the number of Polish people living in the area.

He said: “I know there is a lot of Polish people that live here so I hope they will join the stadium and they will come to watch games – maybe because of me. We could have more Polish fans!”

The former FC Twente player would also become the first Polish player to represent Leeds in the league and is hoping others will follow in his footsteps.

“At the end of the last season Leeds showed some interest in me and basically I have been thinking about it since.”

“I had a good season at Twente and I felt good there and stuff like that but the decision wasn’t difficult because it’s the dream of every small boy in Poland and Europe to play in England. I wanted to come here – I remember Leeds playing in the Premier League.”

Klich is looking forward to playing with United striker Chris Wood – who captained the New Zealand side who lost 4-0 against Portugal in the Confederations Cup in Russia on Saturday.

“I am really looking forward to playing with a striker who can score 30 goals,” admitted Klich. “That means you can get assists as well. I can’t wait to play for the team.”
