Leeds United kicked off the new Championship season with a rousing win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Follow the action here.

A first-half header from Luciano Becchio earned United three points at Elland Road as Wolves succumbed to a lively performance from Neil Warnock’s side.

The Leeds manager gave league debuts to eight players after a summer of major rebuilding and Becchio’s early finish was a deserved reward for their energetic display.

Wolves – one of the three sides relegated from the Premier League last season - created little before half-time and struggled hopelessly to force an equaliser after the break.

United should have out of sight by the 53rd minute when David Norris picked out Luke Varney with a neat through-ball but the winger lost control and allowed goalkeeper Carl Ikeme to smother possession.

And Leeds were given a let-off by Wolves substitute Peszko who chose to pass aimlessly rather than shoot in the 58th minute when Aidan White lost his footing on the edge of United’s box.

Matt Jarvis had a last-gasp opportunity to snatch a draw but drove a volley beyond the far post.

Defender Lee Peltier was confirmed as Leeds United new club captain ahead of today’s opening Championship match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In a surprise choice by manager Neil Warnock, the right-back has replaced former club skipper Robert Snodgrass who Leeds sold to Norwich City for £3million last month.

Peltier – a £650,000 signing from Leicester City - remained in the centre of defence against Wolves with Warnock naming an unchanged line-up after last weekend’s League Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town.

Tom Lees, who nursed a groin strain in the lead-up to this afternoon’s clash, appeared on the bench alongside El-Hadji Diouf with young right-back Sam Byram handed a full league debut.

Wolves’ starting line-up featured Kevin Doyle, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Matt Jarvis.

United: Kenny, Byram, Peltier, Pearce, White, Green, Norris, Austin, Varney, McCormack, Becchio. Subs: Ashdown, Drury, Kisnorbo, Lees, Brown, Gray, Diouf.

Wolves: Ikeme, Zubar, Stearman, Johnson, Ward, Jarvis, Henry, Doumbia, Forde, Ebanks-Blake, Doyle. Subs: De Vries, Edwards, Peszko, Hunt, Sigurdarson, Berra, Davis.
