Leeds United linked with move for German goalkeeper

Leeds have spoken to Werder Bremen about Wiedwald’s availability amid reports in Germany that he intends to quit Bremen and is lined up for a move to England.

Wiedwald has been on Bremen’s books for the past two season but looks set to leave after talks with the Bundesliga club this week.

Bremen have effectively replaced Wiedwald by moving to sign Jiri Pavlenka from Slavia Prague.

Pavlenka is due to undergo a medical and finalise a transfer to Germany in the next 72 hours, opening the door for Wiedwald to depart.

Leeds already have two senior goalkeepers in their squad - Rob Green and Marco Silvestri - and youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell has been training with their first team for much of the past two years.

All three keepers, however, are out of contract in 12 months’ time and Silvestri hinted before Christmas that he would consider quitting Elland Road if he failed to oust Green as first choice.

Green, 38, started every one of Leeds’ Championship fixtures last term, limiting Silvestri to six appearances in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Green’s regular involvement activated a clause in his contract, earning him a 12-month extension to the end of next season. Silvestri is three years into the four-year contract he signed after joining from Chievo in 2014.

Leeds are understood to have enquired about Wiedwald earlier this week as speculation about Bremen’s interest in Pavlenka mounted.

Wiedwald spent time at MSV Duisburg and Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in his career and made 25 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen last season.
