The squad at Vicarage Road is a muddle of familiar, lower-league names and unheard of players sourced on loan from Udinese and Granada – two other European clubs controlled by Watford’s owners, the Pozzo family.

But it is a homegrown defender, centre-back Tommie Hoban, who is catching the eye this season.

Just 18 years old, this outstanding prospect is already on the radar of every top club in England.

Gianfranco Zola described him as “the best player on the pitch” after last weekend’s win over Leicester City.
