Rickie Lambert scored his 23rd goal of the season last Saturday and Billy Sharp’s reputation precedes him but Adam Lallana is arguably the heartbeat of the Saints side.

The Football League shortlisted him for the Championship Player of the Year award – one of three nominees alongside Lambert and Cardiff City’s Peter Whittingham – and he is favourite to win the prize later this month.

Lallana was influential in Leeds’ 3-1 defeat at St Mary’s on the first day of the season, scoring one and creating another, and is at the forefront of Southampton’s fight for successive promotions.
