Check out our at a glance guide to Leeds United’s clash with Birmingham City at Elland Road.
Kyle Bartley v Clayton Donaldson: Donaldson is pivotal to the way Birmingham City play and the way Gary Rowett sets his team up. City like to counter-attack, particularly away from home, and use the pace of players like Donaldson to catch teams on the break – exactly as Birmingham did at Elland Road last season. Bartley has the physique to deal with him and that exchange will dictate the scale of threat which Birmingham pose.
BIRMINGHAM KEY MAN
Michael Morrison: Started every league game last season in the centre of a defence which helped Birmingham finish 10th. Rowett’s side did not score an excessive amount of goals but a record of 22 concessions away from home was an especially striking statistic and one of the reasons why City were in the running for a play-off place for a while.
Leeds have to make more of an impression on Morrison than they did on the likes of Steven Caulker last weekend.
Saturday, October 3, 2015: Leeds United 0 Birmingham City 2. Goals: Birmingham - Gray 31, Maghoma 90.
Phil Hay says: “Birmingham were not the best team in the Championship last term but Rowett turned them into a competitive side with more backbone than they ever had under Lee Clark. This is likely to be a tight, high-tempo game and Garry Monk will surely stress the need for quick passing and movement against a group of players who will defend in numbers. A single goal might well be all that separates the clubs.”
