Leeds United are targeting Hamburg striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga, the YEP understands.

Lasogga has been on United’s radar throughout the transfer window and the club are competing to bring the forward to England after Hamburg declared him surplus to requirements.

Lasogga, once a Germany Under-21 international, has been with Hamburg since 2013, initially on loan from Hertha Berlin before a permanent move in 2014, but scored once in 20 Bundesliga appearances last season and will be allowed to depart before the end of the month.

The 25-year-old, who was on the verge of a full cap for Germany before injury curtailed a call-up three years ago, is one of Hamburg’s highest earners and his salary is an obstacle to a move to Elland Road.

Hamburg, however, are understood to be willing to compensate Lasogga’s wage to help finance a transfer elsewhere.

Leeds want another player to strengthen their attack and provide additional competition for Chris Wood a Caleb Ekuban, the club’s recent signing from Chievo.

United recently missed out on long-time target Ashley Fletcher after the youngster move to Middlesbrough in a £7m deal from West Ham.

Lasogga began his career at Bayer Leverkusen and was capped repeatedly by Germany’s Under-21s in his younger years. He scored 22 times in 64 league outings for Hertha Berlin following a move there in 2010.

Hamburg recruited him on a five-year contract in 2014 having watched him find the net 13 times as a loanee during the 2013-14 Bundesliga campaign. Current head coach Markus Gisdol, though, has now ruled Lasogga out of his plans for the forthcoming term.
