Leeds United - Noel Whelan: Very difficult to remember a club as disorganised as Leeds

It’s always nice to finish the season with a win, knowing that you are going into next season on the back of it.

But it wasn’t to be at Preston on Saturday and I think after reflecting of the game, 1-1 was probably a fair result.

It’s sad to see any manager depart a club and we saw on Saturday how passionate Steve Evans feels about the club, how much he loves and enjoys working at Leeds United and with the group of players.

But the end decision and the final decision lies with the chairman and if he doesn’t feel like Steve is the man for Leeds United then that’s it unfortunately, no matter how well Steve has done. I think he has done a really good job at the club since the time he has taken over until the end of the season.

He’s hit all the goals that were required, there’s been some fantastic performances and we have gone on some great runs. But in the end the decision lies with the chairman and not Steve or anybody else can do anything about that unfortunately. There has been talk of unproven foreign managers coming in and if he goes foreign it’s a complete joke. We don’t need that at the club right now.

We need somebody who knows the Championship and knows the right place to bring in players; someone who is going to bring you that stability, that little bit of solidness that we need. If he’s going to go foreign then I don’t think we have got a chance next year.

How we fare next year also depends on if we can keep Lewis Cook, if we can keep Charlie Taylor, and there’s so much that should have been sorted out before now which just leaves everything up in the air. The lads don’t know when they are coming in for pre-season, they have not made any plans for pre-season and there are spaces at the club in the Academy that have not been filled.

No-one knows who the next manager is which will determine whether these players want to stay and there’s so much that nobody knows.

In my time, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a club that is so disorganised. Sol Bamba is club captain and he says he has no idea what’s going on. And as a player, what does that say about the organisation of the club you are playing for? You may love it, and we all do love it, but it’s an absolute shambles.

They are going to get a text to say when to come back, but at the end of the season at pretty much every club I have been to there’s been a programme, of what you should be doing at the end of the season as in training. Everything is pre-recorded so on your runs you have a belt on so you know you have been doing these runs. And you then have a schedule of your pre-season but no-one has got a schedule and no-one has got a clue. They are going into their holiday season blind of what they are going to be doing.

I know it doesn’t matter because you have got to do your job and you are paid to play your football, you go on tour, blah, blah, blah. But it’s an organisation thing and it’s nice to be knowing what they are doing.

Mirco Antenucci has announced that he is leaving, but after his antics on Saturday when he was trying to take the ball off Chris Wood and then didn’t even go and celebrate the penalty, if he wasn’t going to go at the end of the season, for me, he could have gone anyway.

He’d be one of those on my list to get shot of. Everyone should have been celebrating that goal together and he was not the designated penalty taker. He was on the bench and so what happens if the penalty happens in the 37th minute?

Wood has been told to take the penalty, he is the striker, he’s our No 9 and he has taken responsibility and feels brave enough and confident enough to take it.

I think that’s fantastic. But when he has taken it and he has scored the goal, Antenucci actually walked away from celebrating and that’s an absolute disgrace. That just shows me what we have in our changing room and within a group of players which is not a good sign. You can’t have people like that in your changing room, who don’t want to celebrate. I wanted to see Marco Silvestri run the length of the pitch to celebrate. I want a togetherness in a team where everyone fights and everyone celebrates.
