The Leeds United midfielder was due to travel with England for back-to-back matches against Mexico next month as part of their build up to the European Under-19 Championship.

United said Cook had withdrawn with a “minor injury” but he is expected to recover in time to make the England squad for the finals in July.

The break will afford the teenager more recovery time after a Championship term in which Cook made almost 50 appearances.

Leeds said: “It is hoped that Cook will be ready to return to the Young Lions fold in time for this summer’s U19 European Championships.”

England’s Under-19s will play Mexico on June 4 and June 6, continuing their preparation for the start of the beginning of the Euros on July 11.

Cook is bidding to claim a second international medal in Germany after featuring in the England squad which won the Under-17 European Championship in 2014.
