Leeds United are closing in on the signing of Excelsior winger Jordan Botaka after reaching a deal with the 22-year-old’s club tonight.

Leeds have agreed a fee for Botaka and are working to finalise terms with the Congo international after offering him a two-year contract with the option of a third.

The Elland Road club made a sudden move for Botaka after abandoning their bid to sign forward Fernando Forestieri from Watford.

United gave up on Forestieri yesterday with the 25-year-old resisting a transfer to Leeds, despite the club agreeing a £3m fee. Forestieri joined Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon.

Interest in NEC Nijmegen’s Anthony Limbombe also appears to be dead after Leeds refused to meet the Dutch club’s £2.5m asking price.

United have switched their attention instead to Botaka, an ex-Club Brugge player who was born in Zaire and has been capped by Congo.

He has played more than 70 times for Excelsior in the Dutch top flight, scoring six goals for the club last season. Excelsior have used him in this evening’s league game against De Graafschap despite United’s offer for him.

Leeds, meanwhile, are understood to be considering signing a second winger ahead of Tuesday’s 6pm transfer deadline.

The club are targeting a separate player already based in England and have been heavily linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Rajiv van La Parra in the past 24 hours.

Van La Parra was left out of Wolves’ clash with Charlton Athletic earlier today and manager Kenny Jackett confirmed that the Dutch 24-year-old was in talks with rival clubs.

However, the YEP has been told that Leeds are yet to agree a fee with Wolves despite talks during the past 24 hours. A source described discussions as “miles apart”.
