Garry Monk wants to create an atmosphere of “us against everyone outside Leeds United” at Elland Road and set the tone for a tight-knit campaign in the Championship.

Monk said he was hoping for sustained unity at Leeds this season after praising the turnout of almost 2,000 supporters who travelled to Saturday’s friendly against Peterborough United.

Leeds produced close to half the attendance at London Road for the club’s penultimate friendly of the summer period.

Chants of ‘we’re going to win the league’ followed the opening goal from Alex Mowatt, though Peterborough went on to win the game through two second-half goals from Shaquile Coulthirst, and Monk warmed to the spirit of optimism ahead of his first season in charge.

“It’s fine, it’s all good,” United’s head coach said. “We’re all in it together.

“We need to use that passion and they need to put passion into the team – support the team right the way through the season.

“At the end of the season we can have the debate about whether it was this or that but until that point it has to be us against every other team, against everyone outside of Leeds United.”

The 37-year-old is 12 days away from the Championship kick-off at Queens Park Rangers and he will round off his squad’s pre-season preparation with a meeting against Atalanta at Elland Road this weekend.
