In-demand Leeds United striker Ross McCormack has been recalled to the Scotland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Belgium and Macedonia next month.

McCormack, the subject of three rejected transfer bids from Championship rivals Middlesbrough over the past couple of weeks, has won eight caps and scored twice for Scotland during his international career.

But he hasn’t featured in the national squad since pulling out of manager Gordon Strachan’s first international selection against Estonia in February with illness.

However with fellow frontman Kenny Miller announcing his retirement from international football, Strachan has turned to his former club’s in-form striker to replace Miller.

McCormack scored on his last Scotland appearance, a 3-1 friendly win over Australia a year ago and the Scotland boss said: “He’s had a good start to the season and been big in games.

“He was unfortunate not to be in the last squad, we felt we would try to keep the squad that was in Croatia together.

“The whole group did so well in the preparation and playing of that game.”

McCormack, has said he is keen to stay at Leeds inspite of Boro’s interest and the club have indicated they are willing to discuss a new contract with the striker who has scored two goals in United’s opening three league games and is in the squad for squad for tomorrow’s match at Ipswich Town tweeted he was “buzzing” as news of his recall broke.
