Leeds United boss Garry Monk has narrowly missed out on winning the Championship manager of the month award '“ to the man he will next face up against in the dug-out.

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez scooped the gong after leading the Toon Army to five wins out of five during October and the top of the league.

Monk had been shortlisted after Leeds picked up ten points from a possible 15 and also knocked then high-flying Norwich City out of the EFL Cup on penalties.

However, like United, Newcastle also advanced into the EFL Cup last eight after beating Preston North End.

Preston boss Simon Grayson and Chris Hughton, of Brighton, were also nominated for the award.

Meanwhile, Fulham striker Sone Aluko took the player of the month award in the second tier.
