The Whites are increasingly hopeful of persuading young Manchester United forward Ashley Fletcher to quit Old Trafford for West Yorkshire when his contract expires at the end of this month, a move which would cost Leeds a fee in compensation.

United have also shown a keen interest in League Two player-of-the-year Roofe but sources at Elland Road have told the YEP that the club see Oxford’s valuation of him as excessive.

Oxford are believed to be asking in the region of £3m for a 23-year-old who finished the 2015-16 season with 26 goals and nine assists.

Roofe is 12 months into a three-year contract at the Kassam Stadium and Oxford will be forced to pay a large percentage of any fee to his former club, West Bromwich Albion, through a sell-on clause.

United, meanwhile, are turning their attention to other centre-backs after Bournemouth’s Tommy Elphick sealed a move to Aston Villa.

Leeds were one of several Championship sides keen on taking Elphick from Dean Court but the experienced defender has joined Villa in a £3m deal after passing a medical yesterday.
