Leeds United captain Jason Pearce believes the club have signed an “excellent player” in Liam Cooper and says the 22-year-old’s arrival will put heavy pressure on his own place in the team.
Pearce and Cooper are in direct competition for the same position at centre-back after Cooper completed a £600,000 move from Chesterfield on Wednesday night. The ex-Hull City player is in contention for an immediate debut at home to Middlesbrough tomorrow and Pearce said: “He’s a left-sided centre-half, he’s an excellent player and he’s got a good future ahead of him.
“We’ll be pushing each other for that left-sided place (in the centre of defence) and if he comes in and plays better than me, he’ll play. That’s how it should be.
“I’m going to have to work hard to keep myself in the team. He’s very good on the ball, has a great left foot and it’s great competition.”
Cooper was one of two centre-backs signed by Leeds this week, with Giuseppe Bellusci arriving on loan from Catania.
