Leeds United: Britton opts out of reunion with Monk

Swansea City midfielder Leon Britton is set to quash any chance of a reunion with Leeds United head coach Garry Monk by accepting a new contract at the Liberty Stadium.

Monk, who is looking to his former club for the loan signing of centre-back Kyle Bartley, has been linked with Britton in the past few days as transfer dealings at Elland Road begin to intensify.

Britton, like Bartley, played for Monk while the 37-year-old was manager of Swansea and he was used regularly by the Welsh club last season, playing 27 times.

He turns 34 in September and has only one year left on his deal at the Liberty Stadium, suggesting that City might be open to offers for him, but sources close to Britton have categorically ruled out the possibility of move to Elland Road and say the midfielder is due to sign an extension at Swansea in the next few weeks.

Leeds have numerous midfield options in their squad already but the club’s continuing interest in former loanee Liam Bridcutt is an indication that changes in that area are being considered.

United’s priorities this summer included the recruitment of new strikers and centre-backs and the club secured the first transfer of Monk’s reign by signing forward Marcus Antonsson on a three-year deal from Kalmar on Tuesday.

Bartley, meanwhile, remains a prime target for Monk and is believed to be willing to come to Leeds on a season-long loan from Swansea.
