The agency representing Giuseppe Bellusci confirmed today that the defender was still under contract at Leeds United after Football Association documents appeared to show that Bellusci’s contract was cancelled after his loan move to Empoli.

Documents published by on the FA’s website reveal that Bellusci’s registration at Leeds was terminated following his loan move to Serie A last summer.

Bellusci, whose contract with Leeds ran to June 2018, returned to Serie A in July after two full seasons in the Championship.

The centre-back departed on the back of the appointment of Garry Monk as Leeds’ head coach, signing for Empoli on a season-long loan on July 1.

FA paperwork shows that Bellusci’s registration was severed three days later on July 4.

The YEP has been told that the termination was a formality of international loans, allowing him to register with the Italian FA an join Empoli.

A spokesperson for Bellusci’s agent, Silvio Pagliari, confirmed today that Bellusci remains on loan in Italy.

Bellusci, a controversial figure during his time in England, joined Empoli with a view to a permanent move and is widely expected to remain in Italy beyond the end of this season having failed to earn a place in Monk’s plans.

It emerged yesterday that striker Souleymane Doukara had earned a one-year extension to his Elland Road contract, keeping him at Leeds for the 2017-18 campaign.

Doukara signed a three-year deal in 2014 and an extension to that agreement was never formally announced but FA records show that he received a further 12 months in September 2015, at a time when he had made exactly 30 appearances for the club.
