Antenucci was released by United at the end of his contract in May and despite apparent interest from fellow Championship side Reading, he put pen to paper with Spal yesterday.

Spal, who are based in Ferrara in northern Italy, were promoted to Serie B last season, their first appearance at that level since the early 1990s.

Antenucci scored 19 goals in his two campaigns with Leeds, his last scored in a 2-1 win away to Blackburn Rovers in March, but he was deemed surplus to requirements after the recent campaign finished.

He left Ternana to come to Elland Road in 2014, signing in the first transfer window after Massimo Cellino’s takeover of Leeds.

A Spal statement said: “It’s a sensational signing for the club.

“After his English experience, Mirco really wanted to sign for Spal, really embracing the new sporting project.”
