LEEDS United survived strong second-half pressure from Sunday's visitors Burnley to record a 1-0 victory at Elland Road thanks to Patrick Bamford's early penalty.

Leeds were awarded a spot kick after just four minutes when Clarets 'keeper Nick Pope took out Whites striker Bamford in pursuit of Luke Aying's through ball.

Bamford stepped up to take the penalty and rifled home his effort into the top right corner and it proved the only goal of the game despite a barrage of Clarets pressure in the second half.

Moments after Bamford had converted his spot kick, Gjanni Alioski spurned a great chance to send in a dangerous cross when blazing wide.

The Whites the survived a Clarets free-kick which was punched clear by Illan Meslier.

Rodrigo's tame effort from the edge of the area was then saved by Pope before Raphina sent a header over the bar from a fine Jack Harrison cross though the Brazilian looked just offside.

From another Clarets free-kick, Ashley Barnes walloped home a half volley but Leeds survived after being awarded a free-kick following a collision between Ben Mee and Meslier who failed to gather the delivery and might well have fouled Mee.

Midway through the half, an ambitious effort from 25 yards from Matuesz Klich flew over the bar and another effort from similar range from Klich flew well wide shortly after.

Leeds should have doubled their advantage in the 31st minute only for Bamford to accidentally block a goalbound shot from Jack Harrison after a Clarets mistake invited a Whites counter.

Burnley squandered a fine chance shortly after as Chris Wood headed over the bar under pressure from Luke Ayling and Erik Pieters then fired wide from a corner.

Back came Leeds with Raphinha's effort towards the far post well saved by Pope and Rodrigo then sent a free header from a Harrison cross over the bar.

Burnley made a bright start to the second half and a crucial header from Kalvin Phillips prevented Wood the opportunity to nod home a cross.

Raphina's fierce effort was then blocked by Ayling at the other end.

Meslier then saved efforts from range from Matt Lowton and Josh Brownhill, either side of Bamford firing wide.

Another attempt from Brownhill was then sent over the bar before another crucial header from Phillips saw off another Clarets cross.

Whites head coach Marcelo Bielsa called for Pablo Hernandez, Jamie Shackleton and Ian Poveda from the bench with the Clarets dominating as Rodrigo, Klich and Raphinha all taken of.

Only a tremendous save from Pope denied Hernandez just 11 minutes after coming on but a strong save from Meslier kept out an Ashley Barnes drive at the other end.

After good work from Ashley Westwood, Jay Rodriguez then ballooned a good chance over the bar.

Another good save from Meslier then kept out another Barnes drive at the near post and Leeds held firm despite continued Clarets pressure including 'keeper Pope coming up for three late corners and a 93rd-minute free-kick.
