United held an 11-point cushion in the Championship's automatic promotion spots in mid-December yet approach Saturday afternoon's hosting of Bristol City sat second and only ahead of third-placed Fulham on goal difference.

Even seventh-placed Bristol City are only three points behind the Whites who have paid the price for a frustrating run of just two wins, four draws and five defeats from their 11 league games since the 2-0 win at home to Hull City on December 10.

Leeds, though, put in a sparkling display to leave fourth-placed Brentford with a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening - albeit again squandering chances in front of goal - and midfielder Phillips says his side are now determined to pull clear again in the top two.

Leaders West Brom are now six points clear of Leeds with 14 games left but Phillips told the YEP: "I think we kind of prefer chasing.

"When we were at the top and all those points clear we kind of took it for granted.

"Now we know that's not something we should have taken for granted and that we need to step up and show the city what we're about and the fans.

"Hopefully we can do that for the remaining games.

"The way we played on Tuesday night showed that we are a team that is not in a crisis and we are not a team that is struggling to play football.

"We are playing teams off the park, we are just struggling to put it away and that comes down to the way we play.

"A lot of teams come up against us and defend quite a lot and we have just got to work on that and try and score more goals."

Saturday's visitors Bristol City have scored one more goal than Leeds this term but conceding 15 more has Lee Johnson's side down in seventh.

The Robins have been in fine form of late, winning six of their last eight league games.

"Obviously Bristol are a very good team," said Phillips.

"They are a very good attacking team and very good defensively so it will be tough, just like the game on Tuesday.

"But we said after the game at Brentford that if we play like we did at Brentford then there's no doubt that we will walk out with our heads high.

"After the run we've been on we've expected the negativity, we've expected people coming out and saying that we fear playing other teams and stuff like that.

"But we don't feel that's the case. We come out every week and try and play well.

"We're never a team that doubts ourselves, we've never a team that's short of confidence and with the way we've played at Brentford we should have come away with a win.

"Hopefully we can go on a good run from that."
