ALEX MOWATT’S wonder strike for Leeds United against Huddersfield Town in November has been named as Leeds United’s goal of the year.

The goal will now be in contention for Mitre’s Football League goal of the year for 2015, with the winner being announced at a special awards ceremony in Manchester on April 16.

The goal was Leeds’ third at the John Smith’s stadium in an emphatic 3-0 win for The Whites.

Mowatt picked the ball up in the 54th minute from just inside Huddersfield’s half, brought it down with two touches, and then fired the ball past Terriers’ keeper from 30 yards out, live in front of the sky cameras.

Each of the 72 Football League clubs nominated their best goal from 2015/16 as their own ‘Mitre Goal of the Year’ for the competition.

The 10 best strikes have been selected to make the cut, with a fan vote then deciding the final shortlist of five goals.
