Leeds United are on a weekend collision course with promotion rivals Ipswich Town – ahead of which boss Daniel Farke held his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.

A return of just one point from United’s last two games has seen third-placed Leeds fall ten points off the division’s second automatic promotion place occupied by Ipswich who face the Whites in their own back yard on Saturday in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Sam Byram (hamstring), Jamie Shackleton (glute) and longer term absentee Stuart Dallas (femoral fracture) remain out for Leeds but Junior Firpo returned to training at the back end of last week after a hamstring injury whilst Ian Poveda was due back on Monday following international duty with Colombia.

Ahead of the Ipswich visit, Whites manager Farke held his pre-match press conference at 1.30pm at Thorp Arch on Thursday and here is every word from United’s German boss.

Leeds United v Ipswich Town: Daniel Farke press conference every word

What do you need in the January window?

"So, first of all many points, that’s the most important topic and my focus is just on the next four games. I had to talk so much about transfers, incomings and outgoings, in the summer. I also made the point in the last press conference that we have a festive period and right now we’re concentrated on these games. I can’t avoid that we will talk about this stuff in January and we will do this, but I expect a pretty quiet January for us."

You know Ipswich well from your time at Norwich, does that add spice and are you surprised at how well they’ve done?

"Two times the answer is no. It’s a completely different side that I faced with Norwich. I never lost against Ipswich with Norwich and they were spicy games, it’s the local derby and we were quite successful. Thank God we were able to win the game away at Ipswich but it’s a never a guarantee that you’ll keep going with the successful times. It has no relevance to this game. The second one is also no. They played fantastic last season and they have top class players, a coach doing a fantastic job and they have a special, unique style of playing. When you’re newly promoted to play with this special style and unnormal processes, for each and every opponent in a new league it’s always difficult to adapt to it, especially in the beginning you can surprise a lot and cause problems. But when they get used to the approach everything calms down, but you have to say lots of credit to Kieran and all the staff and players, they’ve done a fantastic job and they fully deserve to be in this position. No, I’m not surprised."

Are you surprised that there is a ten-point gap or that the top two are so far ahead at this stage?

"Well, in general, it's something pretty special and unique because normally our quantity would be in many many seasons would be enough to sit comfortably in the top two. This season not, but I'm also not bothered about that because normally at the end of the season, everything is more or less equal. So you know more or less how many points you need to be there and for the top two or to achieve for the top six and that will be the case although in this season it is just a testament of how well Ipswich has done and also Leicester has done so they fully deserve to be in this position that they are at the moment with so many points because I think they're playing a terrific, terrific season. But I think over the course of the whole season, if in the end there are two teams with more than 120 points then you have to say congratulations. But my experience is also that this will never happen but you never know so it's never a guarantee so perhaps they will win from now on each and every game and they will both finish with more than 120 points then you just can say congratulations. But normally the experiences are that this won't happen over the whole season. It's more like about consistency, especially this league. It's a marathon and for that, each and every team has a chance to be there in the top positions come next May."

Would it be difficult to achieve automatic promotion without a victory?

"That's not our topic at this moment. If this would be a game on the 43rd game day then you would perhaps speak about the decisive game or the final. But after this game there is even the complete second half of the season to go so just another chance to win one or three points and this is also nothing to do with playing the importance of the game down. It's an important game because each and every game, you have the chance to win one or three points, but not more, because if we win this game and it's not like the gap is closed and we are there with promotion. If there's a draw, it's not like something has changed. And if we lose the game, it's not like 'okay, the season is over, we have to cancel everything and we stop the season because there's nothing to pay for. We would still sit comfortably in the top six and have a great chance to be there with promotion by using the playoffs and still have the chance in 23 games perhaps to chase the top two spots. So, at this moment of the season, it's not a decisive game and just an important game because it is another chance to win three points and especially in the home games we were quite successful so far and want to keep going with this one and for that we are highly motivated."

Seven goal thriller in this game at Ipswich - can we expect a similarly terrific match this weekend?

"You never know so my experience is quite often when you speak and expect a goal thriller, quite often it is a stalemate and a boring nil nil and the other way around so you never you never know. One thing is for sure, two of the best sides in the league will meet each other and it's always a bit like the spotlight game of the game day and at a full packed Elland Road we are all looking forward to to have this game. It's a great game."

For Daniel Farke, 1.30pm start. Injury news always first and expecting Firpo to now be back in contention and likewise Poveda to be back from international duty with Colombia. Fingers crossed for no new issues.
