Football betting: Sir Becks just doesn't look on the cards

The final column of the year has traditionally looked at the raft of novelty bets associated with the forthcoming 12 months and this time it looks as if the bookmakers have excelled themselves with more markets than usual – many centred around April's royal wedding.

For me and you it's an extra day off, but for the camel coats it's a betting event with prices available on everything from the identity of the best man, the colour of the Queen's hat at the ceremony right through to the destination of the lovebirds' honeymoon.

Don't expect to get rich, though, with Prince Harry 1/25 to get to support his brother in the first market and both the other markets 9/2 the field when really you'd want at least double that before sticking your pin in and having a wager.

Take the day off, but don't take the prices is the advice though there are one or two other bets that I wouldn't put anybody off backing.

Firstly, in the "to be knighted in the honours list" all the talk – and money – is for David Beckham, now a 5/2 shot from 4/1, but whilst Ellen

MacArthur and Kelly Holmes have received the female equivalent – a Damehood – at an age where you'd be able to get up from the ceremony unaided it's almost unheard of for a 30-something male to do so.

Instead then ignore Becks and get stuck into the 9/4 available on Bruce Forsyth getting a late bonus in life.

Come on, daft as his jokes are, the man's an entertainer and he's surely due the ultimate accolade every bit as much as other contenders touted such as Stephen Fry, Ryan Giggs and Simon Cowell.

That's bet number one then and bet number two is thrown up in the "FHM Sexiest Woman of the Year"' award in which there appears to be some great value to be had in the shape of Nicole Scherzinger at 7/2.

That's a magic price when you consider that Katy Perry is 2/1 favourite – not for me thanks – and Cheryl Cole is 5/2 – won't we eventually get fed up with everybody's favourite Geordie?

No, Lewis Hamilton's girlfriend is the one to back and whilst I don't

know a lot about the Pussy Cat Dolls singer, apart from her date of birth, address, favourite drink, favourite dress, shoe size etc, I'm still confident that the lads of the nation will end up joining me in voting for her.

Of the other bets available there's not a great deal of value to be had at all with Ashley Cole to sign for Newcastle at 100/1 about as bad a price as there is when you consider that a chorus of fifty thousand let the Chelsea star know with typical north-east delivery what they thought of him at St James' Park recently.

Well nearly as bad as there is because the 20/1 on Rihanna being Matt Cardle's next girlfriend has to go down as the worst bet ever.

One's a mega star with a golden voice and great looks – the other's Matt Cardle and the X-Factor winner will do well over the coming year to keep his picture in the papers never mind with Rihanna on his arm.

Anyway, best wishes for a prosperous punting new year to you all.
