Colton Juniors U-15s 7
Rothwell U-15s 3
Date: Sunday, November 11
Competition: Leeds & District
At the start of the day Colton were positioned in third place, although this may well have been a false position.
The Leeds & District website had only registered six games played up to now while Colton were on their ninth. Rothwell were positioned in mid-table.
A large group of spectators gathered on a fine but cold Remembrance Sunday afternoon and watched the game set off brightly. There were no alterations to a winning team with the usual 4-4-2 formation being used for Colton.
Early pressure was applied by Colton and good interplay between Ryan Brogdan and George Walker released James Hazelgrave for the first attempt on goal. With that Rothwell were sparked into life and had 3 successive corners.
They pinned Colton back and on the 20th minute struck the first goal of the game. 1 -0 to Rothwell and Colton had been caught cold.
George Walker than began to take the game by the scruff of the neck and set up a number of opportunities, the last of these being a ball through to James Hazelgrave who struck a fine shot to make it 1 -1.
With the Colton captain Sam Rudd & Dalton Fotherby once again excelling in the centre back positions there was little opportunity for Rothwell to make in roads into Colton's goal area. They were well supported by the rampaging wing backs of Matt Young and Ronan Whittle who interplayed well with the Colton midfield and set up a further attempt on goal for James Hazelgrave and he finished well for his second of the match and 2 – 1 to Colton.
This was quite quickly followed by yet another sweet George Walker pass to James Green and he finished with a crisp left foot drive to the keepers left and 3 – 1 score line.
Half time arrived with Colton and Rothwell both having had a fair share of possession. Rob 'Mourinho' Hamblett and Nigel the trainer did their usual all inspiring half time team talk which once again girded the loins of the Colton team.
The second half started with the introduction of the utility backs of Sam Bateman and Harrison Brazier. Rothwell pressed play and Colton keeper Adam Hamblett pulled of a great save after having very little to do in the first half. Carelessness at the back was the main threat to Rothwell as good runs by the Colton forwards always caused problems but as Colton pressurised Rothwell they responded and brought the score line back to 3 – 2.
It wasn't too long before Dalton Fotherby drove straight through the middle of the park and scored an excellent goal. 4 -2 to Colton and they were back in the driving seat.
Colton stepped up the pace and James Hazelgrave's persistence was rewarded with a great right foot shot and yet another hat trick. 5 -2. It was becoming a canter in the woods for Colton with Josh Gould, James Hazelgrave & Ben Craven all proving a handful in the final third of the field.
It wasn't too long before James Green added to his current run of form and rattled in two late goals for yet another hat-trick and a final score line of 7 - 3.
The game was a hard fought encounter and one which the referee did his best to contain. The score line would appear to show a relatively ones sided game but it was far from it.
Colton's fitness and team work appeared to have made the difference and with a number of the team having had their best games, Ronan Whittle, George Walker and an ever reliable goal keeper in Adam Hamblett, it was always going to be Colton's day.
Next weekend Colton play at home in the Leeds & District Cup against Yorkshire Amateurs.
